About Permitting University

The Permitting Council launched Permitting University in 2024, as part of our mission to support permitting excellence across the federal government. Permitting University provides training to staff at agencies represented on the Permitting Council to enhance permitting expertise and core skills. By building capacity and coordination across the federal government through Permitting University, the Permitting Council is helping to move projects forward effectively. Starting with training on the fundamentals of environmental review and permitting, including NEPA and project management, more courses will be offered in the future. Permitting University will help build a well-rounded, skilled permitting workforce ready to navigate complex projects smoothly and efficiently.  

Investing in Federal Permitting Expertise

Permitting University is funded by the Permitting Council, ensuring that agency staff have access to top-tier training resources at no cost and can develop the tools they need to succeed. This training is especially vital as we experience a rapid expansion in the permitting workforce to support the implementation of federal infrastructure investments. Strengthening the federal workforce’s permitting knowledge and skills help reduce project delays, minimize bottlenecks, and maintain high standards in environmental reviews.

Preparing Our Teams for the Future

The courses offered through Permitting University are specifically researched to support both new hires and current federal personnel, equipping them with the essential tools and knowledge required to navigate the evolving infrastructure landscape. By making courses available across multiple agencies, Permitting University will also help to improve coordination and consistency in environmental reviews. As the program progresses, additional courses will be introduced to further strengthen cross-government permitting expertise and foster enhanced collaboration.

Permitting University represents one of the key initiatives undertaken by the Permitting Council to improve the federal permitting process and to provide robust support for the critical infrastructure projects that are vital to the nation's continued growth and success.
